What a contractor invoice should include
A professional invoice protects you legally and speeds up payment. Every invoice should have:
Business name and contact
Your full business name, phone number or email. If you have a license number, include it — it builds trust.
Unique invoice number
Sequential numbering (INV-001, INV-002…) makes it easy to track and reference in disputes.
Invoice date and due date
Both dates are required. Net 30 is standard; some trades use Net 14 or due on receipt.
Itemised line items
List each service or material separately — description, quantity, unit rate, and line total. Avoid lump sums; itemised invoices get paid faster.
Subtotal, tax, and total
Break out tax clearly. If you charge sales tax on materials, show it as a separate line.
Payment instructions
How you want to be paid: bank transfer, cheque, card link. Include account details or a Stripe/PayPal link.
